If the internet suddenly slows down, you need to act quickly. Especially if you have already been looking forward to a nice Netflix evening or if your offspring is in the middle of important school work.
But even if the problems do not arise suddenly but persist, you should take remedial action. After all, surfing, online shopping, streaming, and the like are not much fun if the internet connection is poor.
We'll show you what you can do about the slow internet. Basically, it is very important to know that there are many possible causes when the internet connection goes bad. The problem can be rooted in the router settings, with your Internet provider, or even with outdated lines. In order to make the connection faster again, it is best to proceed according to the exclusion principle and check all possible sources of error step by step. But before you plunge into the depths of the technology, you should first check whether the Internet connection on another device also slows.
Check Internet Speed
Important to know when you sign a new contract with an Internet provider: The providers always state the maximum achievable Internet speed. This value is based on how well connected your place of residence is in theory. In rural areas, in particular, the Internet is much slower than in large cities. But even if your Internet provider promises you a data transfer rate of up to 25 Mbit, for example, that does not mean that this value will really be achieved. In practice, these maximum values are only actually achieved in individual cases.
Our tip before you go on the big troubleshooting: First, carry out a so-called speed test (internet speed test) online. In this way, you can quickly see what internet speed is possible in your residential area.
Internet Slow? Check
Important for the use of smartphones and tablets: If you are not in the WLAN with your mobile devices, you should definitely pay attention to your available data volume. If this is used up for the respective month, your internet speed will be reduced. In our article " Data volume counters and data computers" we have compiled all the important information on the subject of data flat rate and consumption for mobile devices for you.
Internet Suddenly Slow - Is It the Router?
If the Internet connection is slow, restarting the router or checking the settings can help. If many users surf the same channel at the same time, that can be too much for the line and thus one of the reasons why the Internet is slower than usual. You can change the channel manually in the router settings. In our “ FRITZ! Box Login ” article, we explain how to get to the user interface. Also, check the connection quality regularly. On the lower right of your taskbar, you can see how good the quality of the internet connection is from the bars displayed. You can try the following tips to improve the Internet connection quality:
Invest in a new router if yours is many years under its belt. The older models often do not support fast WLAN or VDSL. It is best to find out more about the model with the best price/performance ratio for your requirements at our router purchase advice.
As a test, change the WLAN channel in the router settings. Perhaps not only are all members of your household surfing the same line but your entire street too.
Check the router's location if you are constantly struggling with your internet being very slow. If the device is isolated by thick walls and bulky furniture somewhere in the farthest corner, that can be the cause of the speed problems. Place the router as free as possible, near your PC or laptop, and preferably high up (e.g. on a cabinet). Alternatively, you can also use a LAN cable or a WLAN amplifier. Your local pc specialist will be happy to advise you on the options.
Internet too slow - check hardware and software
