Can You Afford the Software Licenses Your Small Business Needs? Worried about running out of budget for annual maintenance costs?
For many small businesses, the cost of purchasing and maintaining
software is a huge drain on their resources.
Fortunately, there is Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). Find
out how SaaS can save your business money.
WHAT IS SAAS AND
WHAT MAKES IT ATTRACTIVE?
SaaS is a software delivery model that enables you, the user, to
access programs over the Internet from any device. This gives you more
flexibility as you don't have to go to the office to use the software. You
can work from anywhere as long as you can get online.
Unlike a traditional on-site facility that stores software
locally, SaaS is hosted in the cloud. By outsourcing software hosting to a
third party, you are outsourcing all of the responsibilities associated with
maintenance, such as upgrades and troubleshooting. In a way, buying SaaS
is like renting a car: someone else owns the vehicle and pays to maintain it,
but you are allowed to drive it.
As you move software ownership away from your company, how much
you spend on it also changes. With proprietary software, you buy a license
and pay annual support fees that can be up to 22% of the price of the license
fees (ouch!) With SaaS, you pay a monthly or annual subscription fee that
covers licenses, support, and other fees. This is better as it allows you
to spread the cost out on a monthly basis instead of buying expensive licenses
out-of-the-box and receiving a huge maintenance bill every year.
WILL MY DATA BE SAFE
WITH SAAS?
Some companies are reluctant to move to SaaS for data security
reasons. Who will my data belong to? Will my data be safe? What
if the provider goes out of business?
This will put your mind at ease: when you outsource your
software to a SaaS provider, you need to sign a Service Level Agreement (SLA). This
should state that you are the owner of the data and that the provider is
obliged to provide access to your data even if the provider suffers from
extreme circumstances such as economic difficulties or disasters.
Data hosted by a SaaS provider is more secure than data stored
on the average SMB's network. That's because SaaS providers undergo rigorous
security reviews on a regular basis, forcing them to invest more in security,
backup technology, and maintenance than a typical SMB.
SHOULD I SWITCH TO
SAAS OR STICK WITH ON-SITE SOLUTIONS?
SaaS is an ideal solution for small and medium-sized businesses
looking to reduce their up-front costs. Large companies or those with
complex processes will benefit more from a traditional on-site solution as it
offers more functionality and is completely customizable.
